She made her Broadway debut at just 13 in Skydrift, starring Eli Wallach. Then, in true Hollywood tradition, a talent scout spotted her and arranged for the teen to meet MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer, who signed her to a film contract. Some of her appearances on the big screen include Singin’ in the Rain starring Gene Kelly and The King and I starring Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr. Some of her favorite stage musical credits include West End productions of Hal Prince’s 1962 production of She Loves Me and the 1997 run of Sunset Boulevard.
Moreno belongs to an elite group of only 12 living performers who have won the entertainment industry’s most prestigious awards: The Emmy, The Oscar, The Grammy and The Tony. She actually won two Emmys, first for a 1977 variety appearance on The Muppet Show and the following year for a dramatic turn on The Rockford Files. Her Oscar came in 1962 for her starring role as Anita in West Side Story for which she also won the Golden Globe. The Grammy was for her 1972 performance on The Electric Company Album based on the long-running children’s television series. The Tony Award was for her 1975 comedic turn as Googie Gomez in The Ritz.
She was also honored by her peers as the 50th recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award and her book Rita Moreno: A Memoir, published by Celebra Books, became a New York Times Bestseller. In December 2015 Rita received the Kennedy Center Honor for her lifetime contributions to American culture and this year her career was immortalized on television as a Jeopardy category. For her two very special evenings in Feinstein’s at the Nikko, Ms. Moreno will perform some of her favorite songs from the Broadway and Great American Songbooks as well as share fascinating stories from her extraordinary life.
